Legislative Consultation and the Forensic Specialist

Forensic mental health specialists are well-positioned to infl uence the development of new legislation and the amendment of existing laws by virtue of their knowledge of case law and statutes, their experience with various matters related to the justice system and the legal regulation of psychiatry, and their clinical and/or research expertise in mental health. Such infl uence may be mediated through professional organizations, government agencies, or legislative liaisons or lobbyists. Forensic specialists may also interact directly with legislators as voting constituents or members of various interest groups.
