Expert witnesses, who provide opinions based on their expertise, should be distinguished from professional witnesses (e.g., a doctor giving a factual account of treatment, such as a medical fact) and ordinary witnesses of fact based on their direct observations. Experts write reports. Professional and ordinary witnesses give statements.
