ABSTRACT

Following a brief historical consideration of the use of positron emission tomography (PET) in studies of violent behavior, this chapter discusses the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in criminal psychopathy, violent male offenders diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia at the time of the index offense, and the interplay of schizophrenia with psychopathy. Studies of pedophilia, both homosexual and heterosexual, are then described, followed by conduct disorder in children and impulsivity in juveniles. The chapter ends by briefly discussing the potential use of fMRI by the police and the legal system.
