ABSTRACT
A psychoactive substance is a substance whose administration can lead to relatively rapid central nervous system effects, including a change in the level of consciousness or the state of mind. This chapter considers the psychoactive substances that are most commonly abused. Aspects of relevant legislation from England and Wales are then described, followed by forensic psychiatric aspects.
