ABSTRACT

Introduction Imagine waking up some morning to find yourself suddenly in a foreign country-you’re not sure how you got there; you don’t know the language or the local customs; you have neither a guide nor a reliable translator; and, worst of all, you are in pain. It would be disorienting and frightening. Travel can be wonderful and lead to great adventures, but most people are more comfortable when they are able to plan a trip, learn some of the language, and hire a guide or arrange accommodations and adventures in advance-and even the most well-planned trip can be disrupted by unexpected issues or getting sick. Figure 5.1 highlights the potential for multilingual confusion around hospital visits.
