ABSTRACT

Justice Cardozo’s well-known quote illustrates the longestablished right to self-determination of competent patients. at is, they should be free to make informed treatment decisions for themselves. Although this principle is seemingly straightforward, especially in a society such as the United States where a signicant emphasis on individual rights exists, its translation into clinical practice is more complicated.
