ABSTRACT

Regardless of the causes, remedies are increasingly being emphasized that include behavioral health and justice system partnerships for innovation in collaborative services (Council of State Governments 2014). For example, eorts have been building to establish what in broad-based terms can be called “jail diversion.” Although this is a term that is evolving and shiing to more nuanced approaches and de- nitions, the general theme for this umbrella term encompasses programs that are designed to divert and redirect individuals from the justice system to alternative treatmentbased programs as a more appropriate and eective strategy for their care. is chapter will review the evolution of the concepts related to jail diversion and describe specialty programs that have developed to redirect individuals with mental illness and co-occurring disorders, when appropriate and safe, into alternative services.
