A word of caution seems fitting; this is a tool to increase worker engagement and improve operational learning. Team-based learning became an attractive first tool to use while the thinking is new and the excitement is high. A Learning Team helps a manager just starting this journey to have an enlightened way to do something. The benefit is this tool will lead to a completely new understanding of how safety learning can and should be happening within the organization. As organizations begin to shift their thinking from the old view to the new view of understanding and defining safety, the journey is an interesting one. The organization appears to understand that it is time to do and think differently about managing human performance. The reframing of safety as a thought experiment is sometimes painful, often controversial, and eventually truly enlightening. However, the payoff for reframing the way safety professionals' organization seems to be very high.
