ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to guide those involved in patient care by providing direct access to easy-to-use algorithms for commonly encountered clinical scenarios. Standardized treatment management plans are defined through the algorithms. Clinician and patient acceptance are required in order to use algorithms, and every effort has been made to ensure that the algorithms listed utilize tests that are widely available and have been validated for the disease process being evaluated. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a problem that is encountered by a wide variety of patients and providers. Without deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis, VTE rates are high for both surgical and non-surgical hospitalized patients. Patients with iliofemoral DVT who are ambulatory should be considered for thrombus removal. Patients with occlusive thrombus of the femoral vein involving the profunda femoris have obliterated venous drainage from the lower extremity and often exhibit severe post-thrombotic morbidity. The approach for the reversal of the new oral anticoagulants should be determined by the patient’s clinical status.
