ABSTRACT

The TLCO is a snapshot of the anatomy of the gas exchanger, the lung’s potential for meeting metabolic demands for oxygen uptake (V′O2), particularly on exercise. The TLCO, measured at rest, is the link, in terms of CO transfer, between the alveolar epithelial membrane and the red cells in the pulmonary capillaries (2).
