ABSTRACT

The neurologic exam continuously changes as the newborn progresses to being an infant and then a toddler. It is important for the health-care professional to be aware of the specifics to tailor the examination based on milestones. This chapter provides information to assist the health-care professional in distinguishing the normal from the abnormal during examination in the clinical setting. Understanding milestones and delays enables the health professional to recommend appropriate education focused on overcoming or improving the deficits. Psychological confidence is provided to the child as specific skills improve over a period of time. The examination starts with a detailed history beginning from the pregnancy, complications during pregnancy, and delivery. This is followed by a detailed history of the developments and neurologic issues noted by the parents. The motor examination performed should test posture, tone, and strength of the child. In an infant, posture is the key to identifying some of the neurologic problems.
