ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some anesthetic agents for neuroanesthesia, such as intravenous anesthetic agents and neuromuscular blocking agents. Propofol is commonly used for intravenous induction during neurosurgical procedures. It is also used for conscious sedation. Volatile anesthetics are frequently an important component of anesthesia for complex neurosurgery. The most commonly used volatile anesthetic agents are desflurane and sevoflurane. The chapter explains how anesthetic agents are useful in cranial surgery and spinal surgery. Anesthetic plans for neurosurgery need to take into account intracranial pressure (ICP), perfusion pressure, and venous return issues. The use of neuromonitoring may preclude the use of certain agents. A discussion regarding the goals of surgery between the surgical team and the anesthesia team is helpful to create the anesthetic plan. Patients should be well padded to prevent pressure sores for long procedures.
