ABSTRACT

A detailed neurological examination provides vital insight into which particular regions of the nervous system are impaired. This information will be critical in guiding treatment. Understanding the neurological examination and approaching it systematically allow for thorough patient care. The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was originally described to comment on the patient with head trauma, but it is helpful in all types of intracranial pathology. The Hunt Hess Scale is used to comment on the level of consciousness for a patient suffering from an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The House-Brackmann Grading Scale looks at the severity of facial nerve weakness in association with acoustic neuromas. Consultation with ophthalmology establishes a good relationship with ophthalmologists, particularly one specializing in neuroopthalmology. Consultation with neurology can be particularly helpful in patients in whom brain death confirmation is required.
