ABSTRACT

Ingmar Bergman was able to resist the lure of Hollywood, and continued to work in Sweden with a small family of talented actors and technicians. His films are often close studies of relationships – between men and women, parents and children, brothers and sisters. By his own admission, they are mostly explorations of himself, and Wild Strawberries is no exception. Perhaps the most memorable and wonderful thing about Wild Strawberries is the performance of Victor Sjostrom as Isak Borg. In fact the Swedish title Smultronstallet means 'The Wild Strawberry Patch', which would sound a bit clumsy in English. In Swedish culture, wild strawberry patches in the woods have a special significance. The remarkable structure of Wild Strawberries must be attributed to Bergman alone. Bergman has said that in many of his films he is confronting one of his own fears.
