ABSTRACT

This chapter describes changes in objective and subjective workload using a range of workload measures. It investigates the workload of Dutch general practitioners (GPs), to determine whether their workload has changed in the course of time, and, if so, to explain these changes. The chapter addresses the question: did the objective and subjective workload of Dutch GPs change between 1987 and 2001? Although workload is partly determined by care demand, it can be influenced by the GP. Objective workload measures were derived from consultation registration, video observations and diaries. I. Morrison and R. Smith expect a firm increase in workload, and the decline of satisfaction among Dutch GPs could be regarded as an indication of this increase. Although the average list size per fte has increased, the GP density - the number of GPs divided by number of Dutch citizens - has stayed more or less the same in this period.
