ABSTRACT
As a research lead you have a whole range of roles to play. You will be the role model for your team, being ultimately responsible for the standards of research practised. If you are an experienced leader, researchers in your team will be to some extent your apprentices, especially if they are at early stages in their research careers. Your team may be dependent on you for their livelihoods, and the extent of research funding. You will encourage them, chivvy them on to meet deadlines, challenge them to achieve their best and be their critical friend as to their research outputs.
