ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the implications of United Kingdom law in end-of-life care and the challenges for teaching and incorporating aspects of law into cancer and palliative care educational programmes. It explores that the law does govern what happens in healthcare and society using sources of law. In relation to cancer and palliative care specifically, the law's application via a number of legal procedures, together with factual information and sources, reminds people about life, quality of life and death. Practitioners in the field of cancer and palliative care, while supporting the patient and family until death, need to appreciate the importance of 'after-death care' and the legal requirements facing carers and families. For any teacher in cancer, palliative and terminal care - the novice and the experienced educator alike–medical law is a huge subject to tackle and yet it is an important area to address.
