ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the ways that the Cancer Tales workbook can be used in teaching to facilitate enjoyable learning and identifies the strengths of using stories as a 'performance' to teach healthcare professionals. The Cancer Tales workbook contains the full text of the Cancer Tales plays, alongside additional information, to enable easy cross-referencing, and all evidence-based. A team of dedicated communication skills experts came together to adapt the play, using the experiences of the characters in Cancer Tales, and to provide commentary and learning points from the text in the form of a highly individualised workbook. In the Cancer Tales context, a clinician who is skilled in communication training can initiate an action learning sets which can integrate the varied aspects of communication with members' own unique communication issues. The Cancer Tales editors intended that the facilitators would include their own material, which can only add to its richness.
