ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on teaching the staff in hospitals, the community and schools to help and support the children and young people who experience the effects of life-threatening illnesses. Children and young people reported that their schools had not been particularly helpful after the death of a parent, and there tended to be a poor response by school when they returned after the death. All professionals need to have some understanding of bereavement theories and processes, for both adults and children; and how to respond to children before and after a death. The chapter provides describes the development of the teaching of cancer, palliative care, loss and bereavement in healthcare, education and in schools. This will support children and young people in their understanding and coping with this difficult and sensitive area. Many children are anxious about catching cancer, so health professionals need to be taught the importance of listening intently and attentively to discover the children's fears and concerns.
