ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the value of educational theory for the preparation of teachers in primary care. To help the development of new teachers, the complexity needs to be addressed within a supportive yet challenging learning environment. Students are expected to evaluate their own strengths and weaknesses, as teachers and as team members, applying their own judgements both confidently and sensitively. Preparing primary care practitioners for a teaching role is an exciting challenge, particularly as the participants will almost certainly model the methods used in the teaching programme as they develop their own teaching practice. The 'Teaching The Teachers' (TTT) course, based in London, provides a 10-month university-accredited course, that leads to a postgraduate certificate for teachers in primary care. The TTT course is a generic course for teachers in primary care within the National Health Service. The aims of the TTT curriculum are to meet the broad educational needs of all teachers in primary care.
