ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the recruitment process and procedures for the specialist registrar and general practitioner registrar grades. With patient safety a priority and the need to underpin this with professional competence, it becomes essential to select the best candidates for training by the most appropriate means. The recruitment of fixed-term training appointments which offers structured training but do not lead to the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training. These typically last for one to two years of training. Doctors appointed to fixed-term training appointments are usually overseas doctors who do not have right of residence. The London Deanery recommends that, wherever possible, recruitment is planned at least 12 months in advance of positions becoming available. The Chair of the Speciality Training Committee or the Training Programme Director will look at the current stock of trainees and make an assessment of the number of vacancies needing to be filled at the next recruitment episode.
