ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Motivational interviewing (MI) has strong conceptual and empirical grounding for the treatment of people experiencing mental health-substance use disorders. Motivational interviewing is a therapeutic technique with specifi c and teachable skills, which will be discussed throughout this chapter. In addition, MI is an interpersonal style, or way of being with the individual, and much of the eff ectiveness of the approach is likely a by-product of embodying the ‘spirit’ of the intervention. MI is oft en referred to as a guiding approach, in which the professional is encouraged to engage in specifi c strategies that are designed to mobilise the individual’s internal resources. MI also facilitates an integrated approach to treatment, and allows individuals the opportunity to address multiple concerns or problem behaviours within a single setting.
