It is widely published that chronic ulceration of the leg affects 1%–2% of the population and the majority of this ulceration occurs in people aged 65 or over, although this is not always the case.1 Under the age of 40 the prevalence of ulceration in men and women is similar but with increasing age it is higher in women.
