Smoking cessation guidelines recommend that all healthcare professionals should check the smoking status of their patients at least once a year and advise smoking cessation. The electronic patient record system automatically requests this information. Since the introduction of the Quality and Outcomes Framework, with incentives to record smoking status and advice given, all general practitioners (GPs) provide advice opportunistically during routine consultations or as part of chronic disease management.
