ABSTRACT

This chapter offers some reflections on the lessons learnt from an educational group, ‘the Bolingbroke Group’, which seem very relevant. The Bolingbroke Group was a group learning activity undertaken by GPs mainly in their mid-career. Fundamental to the success of the Bolingbroke Group were elements of support that were offered in a variety of ways. These enabled the group to develop a task-oriented approach to learning that addressed the needs of both the individual and the group. The Bolingbroke Group was a unidisciplinary group learning activity for GPs and was established to tackle real concerns about the quality of general practice in Inner London. The academic assistants were employed by the Department of Primary Care at St George’s Medical School. The team that facilitated the activities of the Bolingbroke Group initially comprised a group analyst, a senior lecturer and a lecturer based in the Department of Primary Care, and three GPs from the locality.
