ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter provides a synthesis of different sources of information on services for people with dementia and their carers across the Euro pean Union. The primary source is the review of dementia services from a transnational perspective undertaken by Furnish and Sime for the European Transnational Alzheimer’s Study, known as ETAS, in which all 15 member states were involved.1 Additional sources are a survey of specialist dementia services undertaken within the European Alz heimer Clearing House (EACH) in 1997, also covering all member states, a set of service reports undertaken as part of a comparative investiga tion of dementia expert centres undertaken by INSERM and the Univer sity of Paris-Dauphine,2 plus a literature review and direct approaches to clinicians.
