ABSTRACT

Introduction Working as a part-time partner or sessional general practitioner (GP) is a route to flexible working in general practice. There are many reasons for wanting to work flexibly, and general practice provides an ideal opportunity for a portfolio career. General practice used to be considered to have a ‘flat’ career structure, but there are now a wide variety of options that can enhance job satisfaction and keep GPs motivated, including medical education, research, appraisal, primary care trust (PCT) work and clinical work in areas of special interest. GPs should use these opportunities to build a career that best suits them and their individual circumstances.
