ABSTRACT

Introduction There are still very real barriers to part-time working in some fields. For example, in universities it is almost impossible to find anyone in a senior position who is not working full-time, and often doing 60-70 hours per week. Within the field of clinical academic medicine in particular, there is no culture of part-time working or of training in a part-time post, as the pressures of combining clinical work, research and teaching are felt to make it impossible.1
