ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how the results of economic evaluation can be presented to decision makers. Health economic information needs to be collated, synthesised and appraised in such a way that it is helpful to decision makers. The chapter considers some problems of analysing and presenting economic data and putting the results of studies into action. Economic evaluation offers a useful framework that can facilitate the difficult choices with which decision makers are confronted and ensure that resources are used in an efficient manner. However, to date, the impact of economic evaluation on decisions at all levels of healthcare has been limited. Clinical and economic evidence about the benefit and harm of interventions is often incomplete, and techniques for analysing and projecting costs and benefits are complex and still evolving. Policy makers also need to accommodate other inputs, which include affordability, equity and consumer input.
