ABSTRACT
In terms of the fundamental distinction between common law countries where the system of law is based on judicial decisions and custom (e.g., the United Kingdom), and civil or continental law countries where the system of law derived from or was influenced by Roman law (e.g., Belgium), the current Belgian criminal justice system is best described as a hybrid system with mixed inquisitorial and accusatory features.
