ABSTRACT

The appearance of an extract from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in the context of a legal research methods book is seemingly incongruous. 'Law and humanities' is an all-encompassing term that has become used relatively recently to refer to a variety of interdisciplinary approaches to law, legal education and legal research. Law and humanities scholarship has at its core the so-called 'law and literature' movement, and this remains the mainstay of the discipline. The focus upon narrative and storytelling calls for a literary approach, particularly narrative theory, so as to understand the construction of narratives within the courtroom and within law more generally. The field of law and humanities offers then a credible means to adopting a qualitative approach to legal research, which attaches importance to human concerns and values, rather than focusing on the more quantifiable principles that derive from a more scientific, positivist approach.
