ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses the importance of a more holistic approach that not only focuses on the processes of leaving violent extremism, but also includes reintegration processes in a non-extremist environment. It shows a range of relevant approaches and interventions, but at the same time, it demonstrates the importance of local context and the contextual limitation and possibilities. The book describes how a variety of actors, from international organisations, regional organisations, state governments, civil society and religious networks implement and/or support disengagement and deradicalisation initiatives. It provides an overview of the field, which could aid the transfer of knowledge to future deradicalisation and disengagement programmes, perhaps targeting radical groups that have not yet emerged, while also keeping a critical approach containing warnings of potential misuse.
