ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the general problem of landslides in the United States (US). It explains observed and expected environmental changes due to climate change in the US The chapter also provides an overview of existing US and worldwide landslide research related to environmental changes. It presents examples of progressive planning for landslide problems related to climate change by federal, state, and local government agencies in the US The chapter highlights the available US research by presenting selected figures from the work. It reviews worldwide landslide research related to climate change to provide context for work in the US Landslide hazards in the US are managed by a complicated patchwork of state, local, and federal government agencies. Despite the lack of research on the impact of climate change on landslides in the US, some states and federal agencies have begun to develop plans and adaptive strategies that include landslide hazards.
