ABSTRACT

The landslide propagated to the sea, changing the coastal morphology and creating an 8-meter wave that produced secondary damages to boats and other constructions. Dozens of landslides and floods affected 30 neighborhoods of the municipality. The main landslide occurred at Areal, with a combination of planar and debris flows mechanisms. Most landslide related disasters are concentrated in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, particularly in the mountainous domain that includes the Atlantic scarp of Serra do Mar ridge and coastal massifs. One of the biggest landslides in Brazil, involving about 2.8 million cubic meters, took place in 1985 along the Rio-Santos highway near Angra dos Reis and its nuclear power plants. To avoid a new rupture, an official alert was sent to the Geotechnical Bureau of the City of Rio de Janeiro stating that deep sub horizontal drainage was necessary.
