Objects of mobility

This chapter examines the role of mobile phones in structuring and supporting mobility by Haitians living on the border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic who are dependent on mobility in their livelihood strategies. Haitians use technologies such as mobile phones to organize economic activities and circulate remittances. They also play an important role in maintaining social relationships within and beyond the southern border region of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Through close attention to Haitians’ intimate objects of mobility, this chapter seeks to make ethnographically visible the role of the mobile phone in mediating different forms of mobility.
