ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Historically Black Medical Schools as an exemplar of Historically Black Health Professional Schools. Historically Black Colleges and Universities are unique institutions of higher learning that have played a significant role in educating African Americans in the US. The presence of racial and ethnic inequities in health in the US has been well documented dating back to the late 19th century. Historically Black Health Professional Schools and programs embrace a mission of educating and training culturally competent healthcare providers that aim to reduce health disparities among minority populations. Historically Black Health Professional Schools, like many other institutions, are experiencing substantial challenges in recruiting, developing, and retaining effective and consistent leadership. Presidential and executive team leadership at HBCUs in general and Professional Health Schools/Colleges specifically require a unique set of skills, perspectives, and resources to successfully meet the mission of these institutions.
