ABSTRACT

Penn Medicine is one of the world’s leading academic medical centers, dedicated to the related missions of medical education, biomedical research, and excellence in patient care. Penn Medicine is committed to improving lives and health through a variety of community-based programs and activities. Unifying the team provided for a single point of accountability for the information technology required to achieve the vast majority of the goals of precision medicine. Executive sponsors from the cancer center, the CTSA institute, and pathology/precision medicine were identified to guide the overall initiative and provide institutional support. From an information technology perspective, setting the goals to align with our strategic initiative required making investments to enable the storage, management, and mining of “big data,” which included unstructured textual documents and detailed genetic sequencing results, eventually leading to providing patient-supplied outcomes and intensive care units monitor data.
