ABSTRACT

I stretch, step in place in a series of small, quick moves, and swing my arms in circles, all in an attempt to force oxygen through my body. I am preparing myself for battle with my opponent who is in the waiting room. Opening the door, I acknowledge his presence, wondering what he will be like today. He nods hello, looks around to make sure he has all his possessions, and trudges down the hall to my office, barely pausing before sitting down on the couch. Without hesitation, he simultaneously begins his monologue while positioning himself in the middle of the sofa. Stuffing a pillow behind his back, he observes me in my chair directly opposite him. I prepare myself to absorb his verbal attacks as he questions my expertise and capability as his therapist:
