ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the author focuses on the experiences of women within the criminal justice system, including those who have not been charged for offences related to prostitution but who have histories of prostitution and other forms of sexual exploitation. Women involved in street-based prostitution who misuse drugs and/or alcohol are amongst the most vulnerable, marginalised and stigmatised groups in our society. The author explores the association between substance misuse, prostitution and homelessness and address the notion of the un-housed mind and its connection with a body that is treated as public property. ‘Sex worker’ is a term used to describe any individual who has been involved in prostitution, pornography or any other aspect of the sex industry. Women working in street prostitution, residential prostitution or as escorts have been found to have similar difficulties both while working and when attempting to exit the trade.
