ABSTRACT

Most transgender clients wish to change some aspects of their physical appearance. Their motivation, and the extent of their anatomical dysphoria, varies from individual to individual. Some transgender clients are looking to change their appearance to more closely match how they perceive themselves, and they care more about what they see in the mirror. Gender presentation is one aspect of social communication. Gender presentation is expressed in the way people dress, style our hair, walk, talk, and interact with others. It is both conscious — things people manipulate on purpose, like clothing and hair style, and unconscious — the way people move through a room or subtle speech patterns. Psychopharmacology for comorbid conditions is an adjunctive therapy that is useful or necessary for clients in transition. The World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care refer to ensuring significant mental health concerns is well-controlled before recommending hormone therapy.
