ABSTRACT

Using multi-level modeling and data on individual-level responses on women entrepreneurial behaviors from 41 countries for the period 2001–2008, we seek to understand the influence of Culturally Endorsed Leadership Traits (CLTs) of charismatic and participative leadership styles on individual-level entrepreneurial behaviors of women. We find that both charismatic and participatory leadership styles favor entrepreneurial intentions in women in the pre-entry stage. However, it is the charismatic leadership styles that endure entrepreneurial behaviors in women through the pre-entry and post-entry stages. We present some of the limitations of our study and discuss the various implications of our findings.
