ABSTRACT

Family businesses are unique institutions, which integrate two main social units (family and business) together. Family businesses differ from non-family businesses in many ways such as management and ownership contexts and succession processes. The family-based structure of businesses makes the succession process critical and the debating issue. In regards to gender issues, the gender of the owners and the gender-based stereotypical approaches are widely recognized as influential factors in the succession process. The aim of this chapter is to advance our understanding by collecting and examining the previous researches and obtain conceptual maps related to succession process of family businesses and gender. This chapter essentially attempts to indicate an integrated conceptual framework and contribute to the family business literature, particularly regarding gender.
