ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the language requirements and provision at the four most-established government-funded autonomous universities: National University of Singapore (NUS), National Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU), and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), focusing primarily on the first three. It outlines the support provision for students at the institute both in terms of their language skills and in terms of support for content knowledge for those who will subsequently teach English. NUS, SMU, and NTU differ somewhat in their approach to helping students to fulfil academic requirements and develop workplace communication skills. The course on Academic Discourse Skills is taken by all undergraduate students in the first semester of their programme at the institute. The Communication Skills for Teachers course is taken by all pre-service teachers in the institute. The English Language Content Enhancement programme is the result of a recommendation by the Ministry of Education's English Language Curriculum and Pedagogy Review for English Language.
