ABSTRACT

The dangers of 'business as usual' in psychology could not be more pronounced in these challenging times. The profession of psychology recently came through one of the most trying periods of its history, such as the American Psychological Association's (APA) involvement with national security interrogations during the Iraq war and the resultant backlash from that involvement, which raised serious questions about the APA's ethical and professional credibility. It also includes the alarming rates of depression, suicide, and addiction, despite broadening support for mental health services among industrialized nations; the harrowing increase in rampage killing by disaffected and ideologically radicalized youth, despite ostensible 'treatment' for many of those young people. It then includes the disturbing trend toward machine-mediated, consumerist, and efficiency-oriented models of the ideal lifestyle among growing numbers of mental health professionals, not merely the lay populations they serve. Mystery is a place where religion and science meet. Awe-based psychology is a place where they can evolve and reunite.
