ABSTRACT

TU R K ISH WOMEN AND TH EIR NEW ECONOM IC INDEPENDENCE

A n y o n e who has seen the streams o f Turkish women and girls pour out o f the ferry boats at the Galata bridge every morning on the way to their day’s work in Istanbul, realizes that any prejudice against the economic independence o f women in Turkey is a thing of the past. The complete co-ordination of social freedom and economic participation o f women marks the transfer o f Turkey from the Eastern to the Western world. Whereas elsewhere in the Moslem East there are merely definite trends o f change toward the fuller economic participation of women, in Turkey the full process o f change has already been accomplished under the new régime.
