ABSTRACT

This chapter contributes to the debate on the value of reflective practice in professional development. It shows that professional development just like reflective practice is not an easy and error-free process. What knowledge is worthy of teachers' professional development remains controversial. Therefore, an individual's desire for change and emancipation will direct and motivate his/her actions. Professional autonomy is viewed in terms of professional development and reflective practice. Reflective practice remains the important tool that can ensure that teachers as intellectuals build their own identities and cater to the diverse needs of students. Reflective practice is a hallmark of quality instruction and is indispensable in meeting the diverse needs of students in their diverse teaching and learning context. The chapter demonstrates how reflective practices could be used for professional development using the different levels of reflection. It argues that reflection at a more personal level could increase professional value and self-worth.
