ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the notion of teacher effectiveness through a reflective activity carried out by a group of serving teachers. Data for the chapter were collected during the first of a series of continuing teacher professional development (CPTD) workshops initiated and sponsored by the National Teachers' Union, South Africa. The overall purpose of these ongoing workshops is to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the South African schools. For serving teachers, reflection forms a very important aspect of professional teacher development, particularly with regard to inclusive pedagogy. These workshops successfully served the purpose of catalyst and trigger for more reflective practice activities involving many schools in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. It is therefore recommended that more activities should be carried out around the country as part of the CPTD initiatives. Further, follow up studies would be very useful to see whether or not the participants make use of reflective teaching practices after these workshops.
