ABSTRACT

To maximise the value of the experience sampling method (ESM) in the study of mental health difficulties, researchers should carefully consider several methodological and pragmatic issues. Many of these cut across all potential applications of the ESM. This chapter will provide guidance on the fundamental considerations and challenges faced by novice ESM researchers, including the formulation of appropriate momentary items with acceptable validity and reliability, the choice of sampling procedure, the selection of suitable equipment, pragmatic considerations to maximise the effective recruitment and retention of research participants. The overall aim of this chapter is to provide a general understanding of methodological considerations that can then be tailored to a specific clinical difficulty or population.
