ABSTRACT

The Experience Sampling Method (ESM) has been used for over three decades in mental health research. In this chapter, we review the use of this methodology in the study and treatment of individuals with psychotic disorders. Following a summary of findings from various domains of inquiry, we review the benefits of using ESM in this population, compared to clinician-administered measures and retrospective self-reports. Next, we describe some methodological issues relevant to the use of ESM in individuals with schizophrenia and related disorders, including among hospitalized individuals. Finally, we delineate some issues and areas of inquiry requiring additional research and development, along with directions for future research and clinical use.
