ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine the use of the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) in research and clinical practice with people with developmental disabilities, particularly autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The chapter includes a brief overview of ASD with emphasis on ‘high-functioning autism’/Asperger’s syndrome. The chapter will also review initial ESM studies of ASD and outline practical considerations for undertaking ESM related work in this group. The chapter will finish with current and future possibilities for research and interventions using mobile-phone-based ESM technology.
